SHEA STADIUM, NYC – Today we witness the very last Opening Day at Shea Stadium. It is with mixed emotions that we welcome the Mets back to town. Aside from the fact that they went 2 - 3 on the road, their return means it’s the beginning of the end for the old behemoth – and that makes us a little sad. Built as a multi-purpose facility and housing the Mets for 45 years, the stadium also saw the likes of: The NY Jets, The Beatles, 2 Popes, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, The Who, The Yankees and the NY Football Giants all pass through its doors. It was even the host for the star-studded wedding of Peter Parker (aka Spiderman) and Mary Jane Watson in 1987. Many of us saw the improbable “Miracle Mets” earn their first World Series in 1969, as the last out landed poetically in Cleon Jones’ glove. “You Gotta Believe” passed through all Mets’ fans lips in 1973 as a vastly inferior team took the Athletic juggernaut to 7 games in the 1973 World Series. A small white leather orb with stitching passed under a sad old mans’ legs in 1986, ending the most famous comeback of any World Series game. The “Grand Slam Single,” Mike Piazza hitting the first post 9-11 home run in New York, Endy Chavez’s catch in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS - are all memories that will stay with us until the end of time. All of this and so much more happened within the walls of this concrete jungle. “It may be a dump,” said Gary Cohen, “But it’s our dump.” The Matts will be at (our dump) Shea today. You can find us at a BBQ at the Marina Parking lot and outside the stadium before and after the game. Take our “Shea Stadium Quiz,” tell us about your first and fondest memories of Shea and learn some interesting things about the old place - something you might not know. And, as always, please write to us here in our Fan Forum and let us know what you think. Angry Ward, another Opening Day attendee, will tell you what he thinks tomorrow.

This is a bittersweet day. And contrary to Big Head Todd and the Monsters, it's more bitter than sweet.

Nice post today, it was short but it gave me goosebumps. Many many great times at the old dame. Bayside, perhaps today is more a Verve "Bittersweet Symphony"?

It is so sad when you think about it. My father brought us there before we could stand. I will cry today.

Man, there are great memories and you hit a lot of them. Nice job. Im glad to see the new field but Denise is right about it being sad. It will be a lot happier if we can beat the Phils. We need to take 2 from them. Even if its early.
