THE NOT-SO-FRIENDLY-CONFINES, Chicago Last night, after flipping back and forth between Cubbie errors by all the baseman and listening to Sarah Palin sound like a crow by saying ‘Maverick’ seven hundred billion times, I decided to go to sleep. No surprise I woke up to the end result of the Cubbies losing 10-3 and thus heading out left to a 0-2 deficit in the series. Along with Grote, SAF, Dude and a few others, we all should be rooting for the Cubbies. Here are the top 10 reasons why: 10) Carlos Zambrano – Explosive and quirky. Zambrano delivers as evidenced by the first no-hitter by a Cubbies pitcher since Milt Pappas in ’72. The ‘Big Z’ is a cool pitcher with a hot head. He’s fun to watch and fun to listen to as well. "Not talking today," he says, when approached recently in the clubhouse. "Not talking tomorrow." And then he walks away. (Good show of restraint yesterday for not murdering nearly his entire infield for the errors.) 9) Sweet Lou – Who can’t love Sweet Lou? And frankly, doesn’t he always look like he’s had too much to drink the night before, yet turns out a greatly managed game? He’s got some quotes that might support a love for the hooch too: "The fans turn out in groves."... Wrigley Field has "ivory" walls ... "It's progress in motion." 8) Kerry Wood – Was pegged as the young messiah pitcher for the Cubbies back in the day. Unfortunately, he’s been plagued with injury. After a stellar MLB debut season in ‘98, he underwent Tommy John surgery in ’99 and missed the entire season. Since then, he’s had additional surgeries on his arm in ’05 and ’06 (and a knee surgery along the way to boot). Today, he seems a bit bionic, with 34 saves he’s a solid closer who’s sure to get a look when his contract is up next year. MTM fans…this is the kind of Wood you want. 7) The Friendly Confines herself… Wrigley Field. If you haven’t been there, you need to go before you die or before (shudder the thought) it gets bulldozed. It’s American history. Scalp tickets for the bleachers. They’re worth it and are the penultimate in a Wrigley experience. 6) Ted Lilly – Another familiar face to those in the NY area. A not-so-hot Former Yank seems to have found his groove finally with the Cubbies. He’s now a reliable starter (17-9) for the Cubbies with over 184 strike-outs in over 200 innings pitched. 5) Ryan Theroit – Another shortstop wearing #2 that’s just too good to overlook. He can get on base almost every time and is having his best offensive season ever. Defensively, he’s .975 fielding. Not to damn shabby. (Post game note: Way for this bit to jinx him last night.) (5a – A MID LIST BREAK – Kosuku Fukudome. Don’t you just like saying it? Post-game note: After another 0-fer night, Sweet Lou said he’s benching Fukudome. I am sure Lou might have just shouted the first part of his name after last night.) 4) Alfonso Soriano - Sigh. How I miss him. The Yankees loss of this infielder is definitely the Cubbies gain. After a mid-season injury, he’s still a great asset with clutch offense and defense. 3) Jeff Samarzjdia – A young gun in the bullpen. He’s only 23 and has got 99 MPH heat. Called up to the bigs this year, he hasn’t cracked under the pressure and boasts a 2.28 ERA. Jeff was also a member of Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish and good enough for the NFL. He declined and accepted a contract with the Cubbies for a nice signing bonus and reasoning that ‘Wrigley is Mecca.’ 2) The Fans – Honestly…these people know their baseball and love it. It’s a religion to them and something we can relate to in NY. (Even the booing – as last night’s game warranted – is relatable.) 1) 100 Years… since they’ve won it. If they’re not due…who is?? So open your arms, send out the good vibes and give ‘em a bear hug. Right now, the Cubbies need it. |

If the Cubbies are going to roll over and play dead to an inferior Dodger team, so be it. There second string players tried harder against the Mets than the A team is playing right now. I hate just about every team in the playoffs except the DEVIL Rays.

| And the Number One reason to love the Cubbies. Instead of playing in that cesspool city, the Phils will get to play in Hollywood for the right to go to the World Series. |

| I would love to set up a game with our Microsoft ruggers if you are able to make it out to Washington. We created a pitch right on our corporate campus for such occasions. I just ask that you refrain from the "Rangers Fight Song." The HR department would have my hide over that one. |
