GREEN BAY, WI & LOS ANGELES, CA – In a matter of weeks future Hall of Famers in our two biggest sports forever tarnished their images and damaged their games. Selfish and self-important do not typically go hand in hand with the concept of team. Sure all players in every sport have self interests but most delicately maintain the façade of “team first” Not these two. Brett Farve and Manny Ramirez both violated good will standards with their former teams and fans of those teams. It just gets the old orange and blue blood boiling when men who get paid tens of millions of dollars to play kids games act worse than kids. If only there was a way to make pariahs out of these guys for classless wanton behavior. Farve, with his insistence on re-instatement or a trade or a roster spot with the Packers handcuffed his former squad to the point that they embarrassed themselves into offering him a non-playing staff position for $20 million. It amounted to a buyout to leave the playing field for good, for the Packers or anyone else. What the hell is that about? Farve has re-written the book on how to retire in disgrace. The absurdity has stretched to a 24 hour, around the clock “Brett Farve Tracker“ on si.com. Other sport legends have retired ingloriously but never to this degree. Michael Jordan retired from basketball and picked up the ash stick with lame minor league success. He did, however, come back to win 3 more rings with the Bulls only to bow out again and then come back with the Washington Wizards. Bizarre. Human growth hormone’s best friend, Roger Clemens, was forever retiring and coming back for partial seasons. Lame. Even big ol’ Michael Strahan left the Giants with an unspoken retirement in 2007 only to come back and lead Big Blue to the Super Bowl. Is he gone for good this time? Now Farve is back to the demand of an unconditional release after agreeing to compete for the Packers QB position? Will he be a Buc? Will he be a Jet? We called you a “pantywaist” during our All-Star Game review and we stand by it. Manny Ramirez brought disgrace in a different way. He did it by telling baseball fans, Red Sox fans in particular, that a spoiled, immature superstar with a bad case of arrested development can get whatever he wants. We’re ashamed he hails from New York and we’re disheartened that your mid-season demand for a trade where met. You are not bigger than baseball. You are not bigger than the Boston Red Sox. You are not even bigger than a single fan. You’re a low-life, amoebic protozoa. And you’re ugly. So there. ENDNOTE Jerry Manuel, please give David Wright a day off. It’s a rare day to say he lost the game for us but, “He lost the game for us – on the field AND on the bases.” |

Well.. Favre is a Jet. No doubt after one season with the Jets, he will realize that he is not great enough to lift any team from the bowels of their division to a Super Bowl Champion. There were no details on the trade as I post this-- but if the contract is only for one season-- I predict he will retire again after this year. And in going out on a low note (instead of a high one with the Pack's good season record last year), he SHOULD be humbled.
As for Manny... I don't know that the Red Sux were any better behaved than he. The Sux.. and their fans have long had a love/hate relationship with Manny. Moreso.. a 'what have you done for me lately attitude.' The Sux fans HATED him in the early years because of his outfield laziness. It was not until they realized he was staying that they accepted him and adopted the lame moniker 'Manny Being Manny.' I guess they thought that excused him and made them (the fans) cool.
At least Manny went out and spoke his (feeble) mind. He didn't pull any political punches and was honest about his feelings. I give him kudos for that. Is he bigger than baseball... no way. Is his head bigger than a inflatable beach ball.. absolutely. Is he bigger than the Sux and a single fan.... definitely. He is bigger than all of Sux Nation for sure. |

| We need more Dan Murphys and a Nick Evans on each team. I'd even want a Jimmy Rollins or two. |

| Lo siento, Todos.... Mateo had to pick me, Mateo, up at the airport - the flight from Managua, Nicaragua got delayed. We were so elated to be reunited, we fell asleep at La Guardia after 'sampling' the rum yo brought back and missed the news of Favre signing. We then used one of those airport Do-It-All phones to post today's editorial (Are these editorials?). And although we apologize, we stand by our shoddy reporting! |
