My first perusal of MtM in quite some time finds a fresh "new" writer on the scene! Well done West Coast Craig, even if you ARE a Yankees/Dodgers fan. We'll forgive that, as your knowledge and passion of the game and outstanding writing skills make you an honorary Mets fan...or at least a MtM member in poermanent good standing ;-)

Your note made me recalls some of my own meories of the Hall of Fame Game. Although I never went -- even when the Mets were there -- the game and inductions were an interesting sidenote in another long and lazy summer in upstate NY. Once a year we were reminded that Cooperstown was MEcca to millions of baseball fans...while to many of us who lived in the area, Cooperstown was just another hick town (sorry C-town). I was even born in Cooperstown and grew up in the same Oneonta town as West Coast Craig (did we ever meet? Perhaps on a Babe Ruth team bench one summer, maybe even quoting Monty Python??). But years afer moving away, one realized how truly special a place Cooperstown is.

My recent trips back to C-town were not for baseball though, rather for a celbration altogether different. Bob Dylan took a liking to playing minor league ballparks over the past few summers, and he he kicked off two tours at Doubleday Field. I caught both - one with my PARENTS -- and flashed back on the few times I got to play on the Doubleday Field. Although Cooperstown was decidedly "inferior" to the relatively massive burgh of Oneonta, when you stepped on that field, it was most definitely our own Field of Dreams. I will never forget hitting one of my rare home runs there in a one-sided blowout to a team from Rochester, after which teammate and future Yankee Clay Bellinger chided me exhorted me to "Next time, open my eyes" when I swung. Busted, by the discerning eye of a future pro! Since I was a permanent late-game sub, who new he even WATCHED my at-bats?!?

Anyway, the Hall of fame Game will definitely be missed. While I admittedly didn't pay it much mind when I lived there, I regretted soon after I left Otsego County that I didn't spend more time at the Hall or even take in one Fame Game.

To those who have been to the Fame Game, enjoy those memories!!!

Carlin gone - I feel a little older today.

On the topic, the more I think about, the more I have to disagree with you guys. I'm nostalgic, and I feel for the hit that Cooperstown will take, but for the balance of the baseball world, I don't think the Hall of Fame game will be missed at all. Craig, you said it yourself - it plays to about 9000, on a lousy field, in the middle of nowhere. Personally, I can't name who played in these things the last five years, let alone who won. It's about money (of course), and these guys make too much of it to risk injury anymore. Hey, it's getting tougher to get players to play in the ALL-STAR game!

To save it, at least as a concept, I like Walt's idea of a series, and Glen's to make it count - but go a bit more - if you want to give Cooperstown some PR, hold it in an MLB stadium, and stick the traveling Hall of Fame exhibit there for a weekend or more. Hey, at least they'd be playing in front of more than 9000.

Craig, as always, a great account, which I appreciate, but I'm afraid I'm nostalgic for other things that are long gone, like a beer and a hot dog that doesn't cost me twenty bucks.

Here's what I'm nostalgic for -

Ace pitchers who didn't give up grand slams to the opposing PITCHER - pitchers who don't even bat anymore! I saw that, and you can bet I screamed out the seven words you can't say on television.
