A Happy Matts Birthday to our stellarly handsome and witty contributor, Mr. Rex "Grossman" O'Rourke! Mister O'Rourke, you've sucked it up (pun intended) and breathed much needed air (pun intended) into an otherwise slow weekend in Mattville. There was pressure on and you didn't choke (pun intended). Thank you, you Lawrence Taylor-with-a-pulled-hamstring-chasing-down-Randall Cunningham-stud!!!

G2DM. Jordan a prima donna! Paaaaleeeeeease! No one ever worked harder or wanted it more than him. You would have called in sick! Thanks for the back up Vincent. Jordan vanquished my Knicks year after year so I could be Mr. Sour Grapes, but I can't deny his toughness.

I didn't say Jordan was a prima donna. I said the media began to put these guys up on a supernatural pedestal that was not that deserving and caused the prima donna culture of sports figures that we have to deal with today. People do everyday jobs with fevers and aren't made out to be supernatural beings. All this crap goes to their head. Jordan was the best player of his generation, but his ego kept growing due to the insane media attention. He led the way for players to be more cognizant about being marketable salesmen because that is where the real BIG money is and in turn I think all competitive sports are worse off because of it.

Happy Birthday, Rex, and great work.
I agree completely with G2DM's point, and it still goes on today. I didn't think he was talking about Jordan, but the media. I remember watching the "flu" game, and feeling it was an exceptional performance, but it got pretty tiresome - the broadcasters compared every basket to the parting of the Red Sea.
On Jordan, well I'm not alone in this opinion - despite growing up in the land of Chamberlain, Jordan was the greatest. The guy just hated to lose - from checkers to NBA titles, he was a competitive junkie. A lot of great, great, great players - Ewing, Barkley, Malone, to name just three, went ringless because of him. And as everyone knows, Olajuwon and Drexler would have been on that list as well, if Jordan didn't take a sabbatical to try to hit a curve ball for two years. And watching Lebron struggle the other night made me think - Jordan never had a bad game like that, on that stage.

G2DM, playing NBA basketball is not an everyday job. Sitting at a desk with the flu and competing against World class athletes in the NBA Finals are two totally different things. As for Jordan helping to create a negative culture because he was smart enough not to cover himself with tattoos and wear a suit and tie in public (A policy the NBA has since adopted, by the way) and act like a gentleman when interviewed is hardly the behavior of a man who's ego is out of control. He was smart, confident, and driven and deserves every penny he got. You should look elsewhere for scapegoats of the pampered athlete generation.
