Constitution Center, PA - There has been too much negativity this week and it’s time for a change. Therefore, today's Phanatic Phriday will be 100% positive. First, some background: On MTM, negativity about the Mets lax play, AW's Angry, yet hilarious rant, the Matts flip-flopping argument about hyphens, have all contributed to a new negative climate here in America. Meanwhile in politics, the three remaining candidates have vowed to keep it above the fray. If the Clinton machine considers their recent behavior above the fray, that explains Bill’s behavior under the desk. And just this week on HBO, Costas and his panelists discussed the new era of sports writing, the negative impact of the internet and blogs and the negativity of sports talk radio and the focus was surrounding fans and media from NY, Philly and Boston, the new Axis of Evil. For years, the fans in Philly and New York have been notorious for booing (aka BOING) players. You name it, we’ve boinged them. Santana didn’t make it through his first start at Shea and he was booed off the mound. New Yorkers, you should be proud. What’s next, booing ball one? It’s time to turn the page on the negative tactics of the past. It’s time for change, ladies and gentlemen, and I'm here to bring it to you. This afternoon, I will be visiting the Constitution Center in Philadelphia for a speech about negativity. Then I will visit the exhibit 'Baseball as America' where for the first time, the treasures of the Hall of Fame have left their legendary home in Cooperstown, to tour the country. The times they are a changin'... With that, Let me share with you some positives. I am positive that Santana is no longer the best pitcher in baseball; that honor goes to Brandon Webb. I am positive that Oliver Perez is nothing more than a back end of the rotation starter. I am positive that no team with Billy Wagner as their closer will ever win the World Series. I am positive that the windows have been closed for New York baseball. I am positive that the final season in the two New York Stadiums will end without October baseball for the first time since the strike in 1994. I am positive that Brian Cashman will be looking for a job next year because he gambled that Kennedy and Hughes were worth more than Johan Santana. I am positive that Omar will be out of a job despite the fact that he successfully gambled on Santana. I am positive that Madison Square Garden is closed for the summer while the lights are still on at the Wachovia Center. I am positive that the names of these new stadiums and arena suck. While I positively do not like the teams that play at MSG, the Boston Garden, Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Fenway, Wrigley, Comisky, etc, the names of these historic venues should never change. Finally, I am positive that the best responses that I will get today will be creative gems like: - I am positive your town sucks. - I am positive that your teams sucks. - I am positive that you suck. Your turn. |

| Hey, if somebody like Kenny Rogers throws ball four walk in the winning run and end your teams season, I'm booing ball one next time he throws a pitch. |

| Phanatic, I saw that same Costas show. While there was much I didn't agree with, it did make me think about how so much of this negativity feeds into those sports TV shows and personalities I dislike the most. You know, the guys who just scream over each other the entire time. Makes me think that maybe it's time to retire Angry Ward, as I certainly don't want to contribute to this culture. What if I became Optimistic Ward or Thoughtful Ward? That could work. Though it would probably take only one Carlos Beltran 0-4 game for AW to leap from the shadows and murder his positive-minded alter-egos. My head is spinning. I need to sit down. |
