HOT STOVE, OH - We have a question for you; simply raise your hand if you know the answer: What sweet-swinging outfielder has 22 homers on the season and would be a GREAT addition to the New York Metropolitan outfield? If you guessed former Cardinal pitcher/wunderkind Rick Ankiel, you'd be correct. But we're looking for a guy in the Bigs, not the Triple A Des Moines power-hitter who is nothing less than Roy Hobbs personified. Give up? Try Ken Griffey, Jr. "He's old," you say. Well, age is a relative number these days. Moises "DL" Alou is 40. Barry Bonds is older than that. Glavine and El Duque combine for many wins and closer to a century in years than one really knows. Griffey won't be 38 until November. You argue, "We need somebody that can hit lefties." Junior is hitting .288 vs. southpaws and .292 on the year. He's also a good guy without baggage or demons – he’s just been snake-bit with injuries. He seems to be - knocking on wood - healthy now, though. For us he’s a great fit. He could bat 4th between Beltran and Wright. Delgado and Green would be 6th and 7th with Valentin/Easley/Gotay batting 8th. Throw in the fact that Griffey is making 8 million and that the Reds just fired their Manager and you’ve got a good situation for both clubs. The Reds get highly touted young talent and the Mets get a legend who will be extra pumped coming to a contender. There wouldn’t be enormous pressure on Griff here, either. He’s not making obscene money and there are bigger stars at Shea whose salaries dwarf his. He’d be expected to do nothing more than what he’s already doing; that is simply to play like Ken Griffey, Jr. Will we be nervous about letting Pelfrey and Milledge go? You bet. But the Mets are built to win this year and next year and to realistically accomplish that feat Omar will have to give up something to get something. He may be able to give less and then package the other for our other target – the lefty with the whacky delivery down in South Beach – but that remains to be seen. So, GO GET GRIFFEY! If Alou comes back, you rotate him, Green and Griffey, keeping them all fresh. Endy becomes the late-inning defensive replacement and bunter/runner extraordinaire and Gomez goes to New Orleans until September. Next Spring, Griffey plays left, Beltran plays center and Gomez plays right. Any questions? |

If you suggested that trade last year I would have used really bad words to tell you to go do something really bad. This year, though... Even with Griffey older, it sounds pretty good. Gomez is the real star that Omar MUST KEEP. Milledge might have fallen too much for him to go without Pelfrey. Pelfrey will be okay. He might not be an ace but he will be at least a traditional number 3 starter. I say Omar should get Junior.

Junior has a no-trade clause and wouldn't want to play in NY. No way that deal gets done. Jason Bay or Dontrelle should be the focus.

How about Tori Hunter for Milledge or Pelfrey. The Twins can't get more than that becasue he's a free agent. You're crazy for giving up both kids for a 38 yearold. What, are you guys taking trading tips from Neil Smith and Steve Phillips? Get younger, not older! If it's just Milledge, I make the deal. Otherwise, keep them for bigger FISH - hint, hint.

Get Griffey but only for Milledge and some other minor leaguers - Carp? Don't give up Pelfrey or Gomez. Hunter is a good call, Mke....

You really threw me a curve with that proposal. Alou is getting 10 million. You can't platoon him. Griffey wouldn't like NY. That price to too high.
