Thankfully, guaging from those of you out there like Sam's-A-Fan & Luby, there remains a sense of sanity in our fan base. For there is no way Barry Zito is worth that kind of coin - BOTTOM LINE. He got more than Carlos Beltran, gang, and he only plays every fifth day. And you know what will happen next? He'll become a 100-pitch pitcher, while the Giants "... protect our investment." That is just crazy! Omar went out there, talked turkey and saw the writing on Scott Boras' wall (in Giants President Peter Magowan's blood) and knew how this would play out. Moreover, what does the signing say about Zito? He can't be serious when he says that winning a World Series is his top priority. The Giants are awful. They are hamstrung by the Barry Bonds Circus, which plays everyday in every town across the country and he will now become part of that. You know reporters will pepper him with Bonds questions (at least we will: see our version of "Twas The Night Before Christmas" and you'll know why), so that the last thing he can focus on is carrying a dysfunctional organization past a Wild Card Round- if they get that far. To us, it says the guy was just in it for the money and the Mets don't need that now. Fred, Jeff and Omar are building a foundation based on solid men that play execeptional baseball and share a common goal: winning the World Series. You can't argue with what they've done. A rotation of Glavine, El Duque, Maine, Perez and Pelfrey is as interesting and bonafide to us, especially with Humber and Pedro lurking, as any in the National League East. We can afford to wait right now. Stay the course, Omar. |

| But what about winning at all costs? The only need the Mets have right now is an ace and we still didn't get one. Its not going to get cheaper. Omar blew it. |

| You know I love you EVERYTHING you guys do but I agree with Lenny on this. We would have won the World Series with Zito last year. He would have replaced Trachsel! El Duque would have been back for the Detroit series. We would be champs. There is no dollar value on that. |

| Wow! The Hot Stove has everybody warmed up! Okay, look at it his way: For $126,000,000,000,000.00, Barry Zito, who has not missed a start in his career and has thrown MANY innings, will be on ESPN every time he sneezes. Add Bonds to the mix. The Giants had to pay that much to get him. They are desparate. The Mets are not. That said, Omar could throw some lower-echelon dollars at an innings eater like Jeff Weaver, who pitched well in NY during the NLCS. Or, how about The X-Factor: Mark Mulder. He could be a steal in a Jon Lieber/Yankee kind of way. |
