BUFFALO, NY - We never met him. We were snide enough, pompous enough, to think that we inevitably would. We won’t. A good man was taken from us on Friday, the 13th day of June, for no good reason. First and foremost somebody lost a husband, father, son, sibling and friend. As a nation, we collectively lost a beacon in the dark night of partisan politics; a person that spent Sundays keeping those inclined as ‘in the know’ as can be expected in a media-driven democracy. He did so with a naturally easy charm and determination that allowed us all – if but for a brief few seconds – to see our world’s leaders as real people; warts and all. Yet, after watching Meet The Press, one would be hard-pressed to ever know Tim Russert’s own political leanings, which can’t be said for his slogan slinging peers like Dobbs and O’Reilly. No. See, Tim Russert was a ‘homer’ that put his personal feelings aside to simply do his job. He was a throwback, to coin a comparison commonly misused in sports. Tim Russert was simultaneously common and exceptional. A blue-collar, Buffalo background didn’t keep him from acquiring the best job in politics – making our representatives squirm while being accountable. He put Team USA first and brought us his “A” game every Sunday morning. For many, he was a fixture looked forward to as much as the Sunday paper and morning coffee. Suffice to say, our Sundays will be emptier and much less informed. We’ll miss him more and more as Election ’08 kicks into high gear and we’re looking to nail down our opinions. But we’ll miss him mostly because he came across as a regular guy that we could all identify with, especially during football season when, with a mischievous smile, he’d end telecasts with two simple words: “Go Bills!” Thank you, Tim. We will sorely miss you. Rex O’Rourke tomorrow.

Horrible loss for all of us. I still can't believe it. It puts things like Met losses in perspective. 58 years old is just not right. And the fact that he could interview the biggest political figures on the planet and still plug his Sabres or Bills was what made him the special guy his was.

I'm glad for him and his family that he got to see and enjoy his son's college graduation. I'm sad that the family won't have him around for all the other joys and sorrows that are to come.

Tom Brokaw came out of semi-retirement to give the special report for NBC and was visibly and understandably broken up by the news. I'm going to tune in tomorrow morning for what I'm sure will be a fitting tribute to one class act.

I was wondering why I saw Brokaw on TV. ... I thought he had retired already.

I love that one time on Meet The Press, Tim Russert was on air and looked all scruffy and beat from a late night out. Not too many 'famous people' show their sides as real people... and he did. He was intelligent, relatable and likable-- and he will be missed.

I watched Meet the Press almost weekly.........I was always amazed by Tim Russert. He was so intelligent, modest, had so much integrity, and seemed like an all around amazing human being. We lost a great man, and he will be missed by all. God Bless his family.
