INNSBRUCK, AUSTRIA— Prior to last week’s post I was out of town for several days so it took a little time for me to get back up to speed with all that was discussed here at MTM. Now, looking back, I think it is very much worth pointing out that in the span of 10 days we recently lost two great names in the arenas of sports and entertainment. As many of you know, venerable, veteran sportscaster Jim McKay passed away last Saturday at the age of 86. For anyone who grew up in the ’60s and ’70s, McKay was a constant presence, as he went “spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sports” on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.” Whether it was skiing, boxing, weightlifting, or track and field, McKay was seemingly everywhere reporting on “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.” The man could make a Harlem Globetrotters exhibition sound like the 7th game of the NBA Finals. He was perhaps best known for his coverage of the Olympics and especially his sensitive reporting of the 1972 Games in Munich and the tragic kidnapping and killing of 11 Israeli athletes. McKay handled this horrific story with an understanding and professionalism one would expect from a Cronkite or Murrow. Although he did his last Olympic broadcast in 2002, it is still difficult to imagine the games without him. A little more than one week prior to McKay’s passing, Hollywood lost one of it’s funniest comedic actors when Harvey Korman died on May 29th. Korman was known to legions of TV viewers as one of the hilarious players on the Carol Burnett Show. People would tune into the sketch comedy show weekly to see at which point during the telecast Korman would start breaking up from the antics of one of his co-stars, particularly Tim Conway. But it was a two-way street, as Harvey often busted up the likes of Burnett and Vicki Lawrence with his hilarious characterizations. For you Flintstones fans, he was also the voice of The Great Gazoo. The TV work aside, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out Korman’s film work. While he didn’t exactly have a remarkable screen career, Korman did deliver one of the greatest comedic performances ever, as Hedley Lamarr in Mel Brooks’ “Blazing Saddles.” This classic film would not have been near the same without him. Practically every line Korman delivered was both hilarious and quotable. He was also fantastic in Brooks’ tribute to Alfred Hitchknob, “High Anxiety.” Though this movie did not have the following of “Blazing Saddles,” Korman had several brilliant scenes with Cloris Leachman and Brooks himself. As Dr. Charles Montague, he learned the hard way that “those who are tardy get no fruit cup.” Mel Brooks perhaps summed it up best when he said after Korman's passing: “A world without Harvey Korman—it’s a more serious world.” And to be sure, the world of sports without Jim McKay is somewhat diminished as well. |

| AW: We are glad to see you salute these two iconic individuals. They were the ultimate professionals and experts at their craft. We enjoyed them both immensely. Amazingly, neither needed to scream out nicknames or forced phrases and, most significantly, they kept it clean. We can only aspire to combine even just the slightest bit of each of them here on MTM. |

A wonderful post.
Saw an ESPN special on McKay last night, and I have to agree, the style was so comfortable - without "boo-yas" and nicknames and puns - and therein lied it's perfection. "They're all gone."
Korman was fabulous, especially in "Saddles." Tell me, is there any other "movie villain" who could make the line "Where's my froggy?" believable? |

While we're mentioning the Olympics, I completely forgot this was an "Olympic" year. Just didn't think about it.
I miss the excitement that used to surround the Olympics, and the special feeling that it provided every four years. It's lost now, forever, for so many reasons - splitting the Summer and Winter Olympics, exhaustive year-round sports coverage, the change in the global political climate (I mean, who made better villains than the Russians), etc. In the end, the "real" Olympics becomes just another television show. A pity.
AW, didn't want to change your subject, which is great, but thought I'd mention.
