DIEGO GARCIA, AFB – M-E-T-S. Fran from Long Beach presented his fatalistic acronym this weekend: Must End This Season. It has, by most accounts, been a hugely disappointing year to date. And, if you look back at the last 162 games, the Mets are no better than a .500 ball club. Something is wrong. Many things ARE wrong. Which brings us to a pertinent question raised by Fran: When do the Mets accept certain realities and begin to treat the season as a re-build? At 30-32, it may be premature. What about 40-44? How about at the All-Star break? The chemistry on this team is the pits. Hell, the Daytona 500 is jealous of those pits. Yet pieces of this Met puzzle are still very desirable and the inevitable words “fire sale” begin to creep into discussions. Perhaps a phrase like “re-distribution of personnel” would be more benign and palatable. How many clubs have built their farms system and changed their faces at the expense of the Mets? Plenty. Is it finally time for the Mets to accept this cruel fate? If we look at a player as a commodity and who’s kidding who; they are, the Mets have some valuable assets. While they may not click in the Big Apple, a change of scenery may be just what the doctor ordered. Why, for once, can’t the Mets be the team that plunders another organization’s minor leagues and builds for the future? Why can’t the mentality be ‘this year is a loss but the franchise will right the ship?’ Yes, these are tough words for a demanding fan’s ears, especially when CitiField looms large in centerfield. But face it, we’ve stomached far worse teams than this and stuck with ‘em nonetheless. We can do it again if management shows an effort is being made. We have the scouts; let them properly inform management who is out there, what their potential is and how to get them. Who is safe from a hypothetical “sale”? David Wright? Yes, he is the real deal, has the heart of a lion and will continue to learn and grow. Johan Santana, is clearly one of baseball’s elite starters and to trade him would egg the face for generation to come. Joe Smith? Google Joe Smith Haiku and you’ll understand why we can’t lose him. John Maine? We teetered on this one but settled on the understanding that you need 2 quality starters, even when re-building. That’s it! What about Jose Reyes? He’s a Joser/Hoser but ideally, he stays. But with his value and low salary, Reyes offers an opportunity to score big prospects and maybe even an every day player to boot. While jettisoning Delgado and Castillo would be more to our liking, their upsides are low and their salaries prohibitively high. That said, those two mooks are an albatross around the team’s collective neck. Cut them loose and once more breathe the clean air, smell the fresh cut Shea grass and open that wallet to a $9 sausage. Would we like to keep Ryan Church, Duaner Sanchez, Carlos Beltran, Billy Wagner, Endy Chavez et al? Sure, but not at the expense of tomorrow. It is not time to look for deals that give us the proverbial “playoff push”. And Omar if you’re listening: Do not make a deal that mortgages the future! Of course we want to win now but we wanted to win last year, too. We also wanted to win in 2006 - but we didn’t. Sniff, sniff… Yet, we’re still coming to the park and buying into the whole gestalt because we love this team and we always will. The same can be said for Yankee fans. Sure, you’ll lose some revenue in ticket sales, concessions and merchandise but that’s the price you pay for giving us this maddeningly dysfunctional bunch of chooches. Oh, and one other thing. Give us a blanking show!!! Angry Ward tomorrow...

I say fire Willie now and give the new guy until a week before the trading deadline to straighten the mess out. As for the Yanks, Girardi is not the problem. No team with Abreu and A-Rod will win.

Maybe I am as dumb as my friends say but I still feel like this team can win. The Phillies are an injury away from coming back to the mediocre pack and 5-8 games over .500 wins this this crud division.

Nick, I'm with you. I still think-hope there will be meaningful games this September. Church going on the DL does NOT help though.
